ESP8266 LED Display โ€“ Wi-Fi Firmware Setup

๐Ÿ”„ Flashing the Wi-Fi Firmware

  2. Follow the instructions and video
  3. Select the Wi-Fi firmware version

๐Ÿ“ก First-Time Setup

Once the Wi-Fi firmware is installed you will see the LED display come up with a Wi-Fi screen. On your phone or computer open your list of Wi-Fi access points and do the following.

  1. Connect to LEDDISPLAY
  2. Password: password
  3. Open a browser and go to 192.168.4.1
  4. Select Configure Wi-Fi
  5. Select your network and enter your password
  6. Click Save

It should then connect to your wireless network. It will scroll the IP address of the LED display on your network; you want to make note of this. Once it has displayed the IP it will start playing animations. At this point if you are connected you should be able to access the display through a web browser on a system on your home network.

๐ŸŒ Accessing the Display

Once connected, the display will scroll its IP address before starting animations. Use this IP to access it from your browser.

๐Ÿ’ก Recommended: Set a static IP in your router so the address doesnโ€™t change.

You can also check your router or firewall to find the IP address.

โš™๏ธ Features in the Web Interface

  • View current sprite
  • Rainbow mode
  • Sprite mode
  • Clock mode
  • Pause / Resume
  • Jump to sprite by number
  • Reset Wi-Fi settings
  • Configure time zone and DST
  • Select which sprites are displayed

All settings persist after power cycle.

โฑ๏ธ Timeout Behavior

  • Wi-Fi setup screen lasts about 3 minutes
  • If not configured, it starts animations
  • Next power-on returns to setup screen

Quick test:
Power cycle the display. If it quickly shows an IP โ†’ it is connected.

โš ๏ธ Common Issue: Guest Networks

If your display connects but you cannot access it:

  • Your phone may be on the main network
  • The display may be on a guest network

Fix:

  • Put both on the same network OR
  • Allow traffic between networks in your router

๐Ÿง  Final Notes

Home networks vary widely, so setup may differ depending on your router. If you run into issues, you can always revert to the non-Wi-Fi firmware.
